Dental Insurance vs. Dental Discount Plan: What’s the Difference?

August 29, 2019

dentist with patientWe all want to stay healthy, and part of that is taking care of our smiles. The bad part is that not everyone has dental coverage.

Appletree Dental is here to remind our uninsured patients that they do have options for paying for their dental care!

Keep reading to learn about your options, and which is best for you.

What is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance is a type of health insurance that covers dental healthcare costs. It works by collecting a monthly fee in exchange for total or partial coverage of your dental health needs.

If you or your spouse’s employer provides dental coverage, enrolling in that plan is likely a good bet. You could also pay out-of-pocket for an individual plan, but that’s usually more costly than a plan through your employer.

Most dental insurance covers 100% of preventative costs, in other words, 2 cleanings per year, 2 exams per year, and 1 set of x-rays per year. Make sure you research your coverage levels, they vary greatly across plans. It’s also a good idea to check for other common variables, like maximum spending limits.

What is a Dental Discount Plan?

Dental discount plans are alternatives to paying out-of-pocket for dental insurance. They tend to operate under an annual flat fee that gets you a discount on dental services. While the fees vary, they usually cost between $150 and $350.

Most patients whose teeth are in fairly good condition find dental discount plans to be a better value than paying out of pocket for individual insurance. However, the one catch is that if you need extensive dental work, it probably isn’t a good value for you.
